Games Like Neopets (2026): Picks by What You Miss
The closest game like Neopets in 2026 is Marapets, but the right pick depends on which part of Neopets you actually miss. No single modern game replicates the whole sprawling mess of the original site. Players who miss the economy and the daily grind should look at Marapets. Those looking for a deep, lore-heavy community usually end up on Lioden or Wolvden. Anyone who just wants a pet to look after might prefer Webkinz, or Adopt Me! for a younger player.
Neopets launched in 1999 and is still running. It became a place where you could own virtual pets, explore a virtual world called Neopia, and play the stock market, as detailed by Wikipedia. Because it grew organically over decades, it essentially became five different games stacked on top of each other. Some people only logged in to restock their shops. Others spent their time chatting on guild message boards, while a different group focused on grinding out high scores in arcade games.
Finding an alternative means accepting that the web has fragmented into specialized sites that take one element of the classic virtual pet experience and build a whole system around it.
Quick picks: games like Neopets, sorted by what you miss
Neopets, Subeta, Flight Rising and the other long-running browser pet sites already have full reviews in our virtual pet sites roundup, so this page sticks to the picks that list leaves out.

The pet itself: Webkinz or Adopt Me!
Webkinz remains a strong choice for people who enjoy a traditional virtual pet experience. If you’re looking for something aimed at a younger family member, Adopt Me! on Roblox, by Uplift Games, is built around adopting, raising and trading pets, building a home and roleplaying with friends.
Shops and dailies: Marapets
Marapets is the closest like-for-like replacement if you want to run a shop, complete quests and hoard currency. Stardew Valley offers an offline alternative, while the Neopets companion app lets you handle the original economy from a phone.
Flash games: Neopets’ own ports
Neopets has been slowly porting its old catalog to HTML5 and said in 2023 it would bring more back with the Ruffle emulator. They also recently released a standalone collection of remastered games for modern consoles.
Guilds, art and lore: Lioden and Wolvden
Text-heavy sims like Lioden and Wolvden are the natural fit for players who want detailed breeding systems. Both suit players who like planning a breeding line over months.
First: is Neopets itself worth going back to in 2026?
Our full Neopets review covers the basics; this is what changed in 2026.
Independent since 2023, no crypto
On July 17, 2023, Neopets was purchased from NetDragon in a management buyout. The deal was led by Dominic Law, who previously served as the Chief Metaverse Officer, according to Wikipedia. This resulted in a new independent company called World of Neopia, Inc. They secured $4 million in outside investment to fund operations.
The new team also ditched crypto. “Currently, there are no NFTs or crypto used in World of Neopets,” it told Game Developer. By April 2024, according to Wikipedia, monthly active users had tripled, from 100,000 to 300,000.
What changed in 2026: Companion App, Faerie Festival, premium price freeze
Neopets remains live as of September 2026, complete with a footer reading ”© 1999-2026 Neopets”. Neopets has frozen the price of its premium subscription for all of 2026. In a January 2026 newsletter, they noted they haven’t adjusted those prices since 2004.
The site still runs major seasonal plots. The 2026 Faerie Festival runs from September 15 to 29 and includes a player vote to seat a new Faerie Council. Real-world events are also seeing strong turnout. The team reported nearly 5,000 attendees at a Neo York pop-up store in their September 2026 newsletter.
They also finally modernized how you access the game. The Neopets Companion App is available on iOS and Android. It lets players log into an existing account using NeoPass. You can visit Trudy’s Surprise, buy scratchcards, go fishing at the Fishing Vortex, spin the wheels, play games and feed your pets directly from your phone. The June 2026 newsletter lists all of these as things you can now do in the app. The software is listed on the App Store as free, rated 9+, and sold by World of Neopets Limited (the name on the App Store listing).
The Mega Mini Games Collection on console and Steam
Neopets is back on TV screens for the first time since 2008. The developers released the Mega Mini Games Collection on March 26, 2026. It launched on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. The Steam store page shows it was developed by No Gravity Games and published by Sidewalk Games. It includes Arcade, Challenge and Endless modes, alongside local multiplayer.
Neopets called it the first Neopets console game since 2008 in a March 2026 news update. The package features 25 remastered classic mini-games. Players get updated versions of Meerca Chase II and Turmac Roll, plus a new game called Starlight Symphony. A secret 27th game is included in the physical Treasure Pack edition, which was revealed in an October 2025 announcement. Despite the nostalgia, Wikipedia notes the reception to the collection has been largely poor.
If you miss the pet itself
If the main draw was simply logging in to feed and play with a digital companion, you have several modern alternatives. We explore the psychology of digital pets in our guide on virtual pet apps for adults.
Webkinz Classic and Webkinz Next
Created by the Canadian company Ganz, Webkinz premiered in 2005. It started as a plush toy line that connected to a virtual world, as detailed by Wikipedia. Each physical plush includes a code that unlocks a virtual version of the pet online. The Webkinz homepage still advertises two distinct games. New plush toys include codes for both Webkinz Classic and Webkinz Next.
The in-game economy runs on KinzCash, while eStore Points act as the premium currency. Players can buy Deluxe Memberships to get monthly rewards, bonus currency and access to members-only features. Because Adobe was ending Flash Player support, Ganz converted Webkinz from a Flash web game into a desktop app in 2018. They followed this up by launching Webkinz Next, a 3D reimagining of the game, on October 23, 2020.
For players who prefer browsers, early access for a browser-based version of Webkinz Classic opened in October 2025. It shares account data with the Desktop App, though Ganz explicitly states in a Webkinz Newz post that it isn’t optimized for phones or tablets. If you want to play on a phone, the Webkinz Classic mobile app on the App Store is free with in-app purchases and rated 4+. However, its latest version is dated October 23, 2020. Adopting a new pet gives you full membership for one year. The Deluxe tier remains a separate paid upgrade, according to another Webkinz Newz update.
Adopt Me! on Roblox (for a younger crowd)
Adopt Me! is a Roblox game by Uplift Games. Its Roblox game page says players adopt and raise pets, trade and collect legendary ones, build a home and roleplay with friends. It captures the social trading aspect of early internet pet sites, drawing a young Roblox crowd. It’s also in our wider list of virtual pet games across phone, console and browser.
Chicken Smoothie and Tamaweb (already reviewed)
Two smaller sites are worth knowing about. Chicken Smoothie hands out new pets every month to raise, dress and trade, and Tamaweb is a Tamagotchi-style pet that lives in a browser tab. Both are reviewed in our virtual pet sites roundup. They offer a much quieter, less demanding experience than big MMOs.
If you miss the economy, the shops and the dailies
Many players never cared about their pets at all. They logged in to play the NEODAQ stock market, open user shops and sell items for profit. The original game sells exclusive virtual items for real money through Neocash in the NC Mall, creating a dual economy. A few platforms still offer that daily financial grind today.
Marapets: the closest like-for-like
Marapets is the site that most closely copies the classic browser pet formula. The site was live on September 22, 2026, and showed about 400 players online at the time of checking. It operates with a mix of free and premium features.
Missed the old Neopian economy? This is where you go. The explore page lists shops, trades, auctions and a bank, and in the City of Marada pets can “bank, shop, learn and work.” There are quests and missions, collections to build, pet dailies and dress-up games. They even host an Olympics event at Lush Lake. Marapets still feels like 2005, which is the point for most people who go looking for it.
Neopets’ own dailies, now on your phone
You don’t necessarily need to leave Neopia to get your daily economic fix. The Neopets Companion App introduced a Marketplace Hub in June 2026. This feature consolidates Neopian shops for item searching and restocking. You can spin the wheels, buy scratchcards and restock while waiting for a coffee. It fits cleanly into the category of best virtual pet apps that only require a five-minute check-in.

Stardew Valley for an offline economy
Browser games are inherently designed to keep you logging in every day. If you want a deep economy without the psychological pressure of daily streaks, Stardew Valley is the standard recommendation. The official site explains how players turn overgrown fields into a farm. You raise animals, fish, tend crops and craft items. It’s available on PC, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. It’s a one-time purchase, so there’s no premium currency to think about. You can read more about similar titles in our roundup of cozy games.
If you miss the Flash minigames
The arcade was the main draw of many early pet sites. You played games to earn currency to buy items. When the underlying technology died, these sites scrambled to adapt.

What happened to Neopets’ Flash games
In April 2020, ahead of the end of Adobe Flash, Neopets released HTML5 versions of seven of its games. They managed to port three more by October 2021, according to Wikipedia. Progress was slow. After the 2023 spin-off, the new team told Game Developer they would prioritize restoring classic minigames using a Flash emulator called Ruffle. That was the plan in 2023. We couldn’t confirm how many titles are back, so check the Games Room before counting on a favorite.
The Mega Mini Games Collection: 25 remastered classics
The console and Steam collection covered above is the other route: 25 remastered classics, playable offline on a TV. Wikipedia sums up its reception as “largely poor,” so treat it as a nostalgia buy.
Webkinz and Marapets after Flash
Webkinz moved from a Flash web game to a downloadable desktop app in 2018 because Adobe was ending Flash support, as covered above. Marapets has no Flash plugin to worry about either; check its game list for what’s currently running.
If you miss the guilds, forums and community
For a large segment of the player base, the pets were just avatars. The real game was the message boards. Neopets guilds are groups of users with similar interests who share their own message board, as defined by Wikipedia. If you miss that tight-knit, text-based community, you need a site built around social interaction.
Lioden and Wolvden: older, text-heavy communities
Lioden describes itself as a game where you’re “the king of your very own pride of lionesses”. Players breed cubs, defend territory and battle other lions. It’s distinctly for older players. Lioden’s terms of service strictly bar registration for anyone below 16 years of age. It has a highly active community. The homepage showed 1,694 members online on September 22, 2026. The site is operated by Lioden Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales. The economy uses a free currency called Silver Beetles alongside a paid premium currency called Golden Beetles.
The same company runs Wolvden. This is a free-to-play browser game focused on wolves. You create a wolf pack leader and assign specific roles to your pack members, such as hunters, scouts and herbalists.
Subeta and Flight Rising (already reviewed)
Subeta and Flight Rising are two other big communities. Both are reviewed in our virtual pet sites roundup. They offer deep, specialized forums and highly engaged user bases. They remain excellent choices for players who want a long-running, established community.
Animal Jam: moderated, but built for kids
If you’re looking for a community for a younger player, Animal Jam is built for exactly that. The homepage describes it as an online community for kids where players decorate a den, play animal games, adopt pets and learn about the natural world. It’s free to play with parental permission and rated 9+ on the App Store. It offers optional recurring memberships and in-app purchases. For safety, it features secure log-in, filtered and monitored chat, live moderation and tools to block or report players.
If you miss the art, the genetics and the lore
Some players loved the narrative. They spent hours customizing their pets, tracking down specific paint brushes and reading the overarching plots.
Lioden’s prides and Wolvden’s packs
Lioden is built around breeding, territory and battles. Wolvden’s homepage highlights a customized genetics system with mutations, plus hunting across North American and European biomes. The visual customization is tied directly to the breeding mechanics, meaning you have to work to produce a pet with the exact visual traits you want.
Flight Rising and Sylestia (already reviewed)
Flight Rising is famous for its dragon genetics, while Sylestia offers incredible pet customization. Both sites lean heavily into user-generated goals based on breeding specific visual traits. Both have full entries in our virtual pet sites roundup.
Neopets’ plots and its spin-off mobile games
Neopets still produces heavy narrative content. The Void Within plot ended with Fyora stepping down, and this month’s Faerie Council vote follows on from it. They also maintain narrative spin-off mobile games. According to the September 2026 newsletter, both Tales of Dacardia and Faerie Fragments were still receiving monthly builds and seasonal events. If you just want the lore without the browser grind, these mobile games offer a modernized window into Neopia.
Picking one as an adult
Choosing a game in 2026 requires acknowledging that you aren’t a teenager with unlimited free time anymore. You need a game that respects your schedule.

Who each site is actually built for
Age ratings tell you exactly what kind of experience you’ll have. Lioden’s terms bar anyone under 16 from registering. Animal Jam calls itself a community for kids and needs parental permission to play, and Adopt Me! draws a young Roblox crowd. The Webkinz Classic app is rated 4+, the lowest of the lot.
The ones that closed or stalled
You should also be aware of which communities have faded. The Moshi Monsters web game closed at midday GMT on December 13, 2019, specifically because it ran on Adobe Flash, according to Engadget. Mind Candy said at the time the brand would “focus on health and wellbeing of kids.” On the App Store today it shows up as Moshi Kids: Sleep, Relax, Play, a 4+ app of bedtime stories and sleep sounds. Similarly, while Webkinz is still fully playable, the Webkinz Classic mobile app hasn’t been updated since October 2020.
A pet that grows when you do something real
If you struggle to justify spending time grinding for digital currency, you can tie a virtual pet to a real-world habit. TrainWiz is a free iOS and Android app where you raise a pet companion by working out. The phone camera counts your reps, and the pet levels up as you train. This entirely shifts the motivation. The pet only grows when you’ve actually done the reps. We break down exactly why this works in our article on fitness gamification.
